Out in the wash
Article Abstract:
New techniques for the removal of pollutants when treating wastewaters include the introduction of beneficial bacteria and fungi. These microorganisms can eradicate contaminants and remove toxins from wastes through the biodegradation of compounds such as 2,4 D herbicides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and mustard gas. An engineering challenge, however, is to enable these microorganisms to withstand the hydraulic pressures in the treatment tanks. Examples of such technologies are the Deep Shaft, Deep Tank or Tower Biology which enable efficient oxygen transfer for the organisms.

Biological action
Article Abstract:
The British Department of Trade and Industry has identified 47 industrial sectors and about 74,000 companies which can benefit from application of biotechnology. The application of biotechnology offers a range of new products with efficient, economical and environmentally acceptable methods of production. Biotechnology is used to refine crude petroleum, convert harmful wastes into safer effluents and to harness the use of isomeric chemicals in biopharmaceuticals. The campaign Biotechnology Means Business will help in creating awareness in the industrial sector.
