Financial interests constrain drug development
Article Abstract:
Allowing the pharmaceutical industry to control drug development has restricted the development of drugs to treat rare diseases or diseases common in developing countries. Research that will not benefit the industry financially is not pursued. A change in approach is needed.

Biologists are introducing human genes into mammals to induce them to produce therapeutic proteins such as human protein C in their milk. The technique is less susceptible to contamination and is more economical than conventional methods.
