Pheromone trails help ant swarms develop efficient foraging paths to and from their nest. The logic of such social insects is being incorporated into software that chooses best paths for telecom routing and other applications.

Traveling sales ants

The classic 15-city traveling salesman routing problem is easily solved by ant swarms, who optimize routes and learn from errors. An experiment using ant-like behaviors has been incorporated into a software system by Marco Dorigo.

Univ. of Brussels research incorporates the sorting of the dead and larvae by Messor sancta worker ants into a large-database sorting computer program. It is more useful than current cluster analysis techniques because the number of groups comes from the data, not human assumptions.
