GIS manages Andrew recovery
Article Abstract:
A geographic information system facilitated the rehabilitation efforts of agencies to address the damages caused by Hurrican Andrew. The system's ability to integrate computerized maps with computerized databases provided emergency workers with simple yet detailed data to work on. Digital Matrix Services Inc provided the InFoCAD system to enable the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to distribute detailed maps to the agencies involved in the Hurricane Andrew rehabilitation program. The system also helped FEMA to establish critical locations where emergency facilities were needed.

GIS: New York's pipe dream
Article Abstract:
New York, NY's Water Main Mapping Project aims to consolidate all existing data on the city's existing water distribution system through the use of geographic information systems. This will enable engineers to use the database for proposed changes for the improvement of the water supply system. The Bureau of Water Supply and Wastewater Collection's initial study established the viability of the project and led to the development of a user guide and standards manual. The engineers are currently using a graphic design system software to complete the mapping project.

Seattle plays it safe
Article Abstract:
One of the most comprehensive seismic-vulnerability analyses done for a major city's water-supply system was completed by the Seattle Water Department. This was done in anticipation of the system's potential vulnerability to any seismic event. Based on the studies conducted, it was found that some facilities, particularly the elevated water tanks and standpipes, were vulnerable and required seismic-upgrade measures.
