GIS software aids environmental justice, emergency planning
Article Abstract:
The LandView III, an upgraded Geographic Information System (GIS) jointly made by the EPA and the Census Bureau, can help address environmental justice issues. LandView III consolidates Census Bureau data with EPA databases on dangerous waste facilities, manufacturing factories and Superfund sites releases. By employing LandView III, regulators and researchers can have an environmental and demographic profile of any region of the US. Likewise, the program is developed to be easily accessible by local institutions, including libraries, because it can function on a majority of personal computers.

Regulatory reform report concludes there is no silver bullet
Article Abstract:
The regulatory reform report released in Jan. 15, 1998 by the Enterprise for the Environment reveals a shared belief that the nation's environmental protection system needs a lot of improvement. The 97-page report, which was a joint project of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the Keystone Center and the National Academy of Public Administration, provides some recommendations such as government-industry partnerships and more stewardship in the private sector to address some of the regulatory problems.

Article Abstract:
The resignation of eight of the 11 members of California's South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Advisory Council reflects conflicts in the new Air Quality Management Plan. In their resignation letter, the advisers cited major budget cuts and their disagreements with the board regarding the proposed Air Quality Management Plan as the reasons behind their decision to leave. They also criticized the SCAQMD for business interests over those of the public.
