Generating the cerebral cortical area map
Article Abstract:
Data suggesting that the thalamus and cortex are patterned independently, which then interact to generate the final cortical area map is presented. In addition, the findings that signaling molecules secreted from distinct cortical signaling centers establish positional information in the cortical primordium and regulate regional growth are also reviewed.

Cortical neural prosthetics
Article Abstract:
Chronic microelectrode arrays, extraction algorithms and prosthetic effectors determine the control of prostheses using cortical signals. Arrays of microelectrodes are permanently implanted in the cerebral cortex, which record populations of single and multiunit activity indefinitely.

Maps in the brain: What can we learn from them?
Article Abstract:
The application of the writing optimization principal to cortical maps is reviewed. Cortical maps may be viewed as solutions that minimize wiring costs for given intracortical connectivity which will ultimately assist in understanding the function of the visual system.
