Law and policy at odds over Aussie resources
Article Abstract:
The Australian federal government conducted a study in 1974 to examine the extent of the continent's land degradation. Results of the study revealed that over 50% of the country's soil used for providing fodder for grazing sheep and cattle and for the cultivation of food was debased. In response to this problem, the Australian government implemented various soil-conservation laws such as the Soil Conservation and Landcare Act of 1989, which required private landholders to provide responsible care of the soil to stop degradation and to practice methods to preserve the land.

Tropical Asia protects its natural resources
Article Abstract:
Most countries in tropical Asia contain national parks and reserves to protect areas of natural beauty. The World Wildlife Fund, International Union for the Conservation of Nature and other conservation bodies have helped to protect endangered animal species such as the Bengal tiger in Indonesia and Nepal. The region's tourist industry depends upon the preservation of natural ecosystems for continued international trade. Various investment schemes are discussed such as the Dept-for-nature swaps scheme in the Philippines.
