Getting ahead of lead
Article Abstract:
Developments in understanding the effects of lead poisoning on the human body have increased concerns about human exposure to lead. Lead accumulation in bones, which was considered beneficial in the past, can return into blood circulation during pregnancy and menopause. Older people run the risk of lead toxicity from previous exposures. Public health policies that depend on blood lead measurements are inadequate to thwart later lead toxicity. Short-term removal of workers from toxic sources fails to avert lead accumulation in bones. Primary prevention is the key to check toxicity of lead at low doses.

Lead levies toll on our children
Article Abstract:
Children are severely impaired by lead poisoning as it directly affects their brain and nervous system. Around 1.7 million children have blood lead levels that can negatively affect their behavior and ability to learn. Over one-third of black children between the ages of one to five living in urban areas have high blood lead levels. Children living in large cities show a higher blood lead level than those living in rural areas. Blood lead levels in children increases with the decrease in family income. Lead-based paint and lead-contaminated household dust are the main causes of lead poisoning.

Living with lead: a personal account
Article Abstract:
The executive director of United Parents Against Lead (UPAL) relives the agony of having both her young children exposed to lead poisoning. She laments the fact that she was not provided enough information to protect her children from lead dust consequent to abatement procedures. The UPAL program initiated in Chicago, IL, aims to disseminate information among parents about the dangers of lead poisoning. In a world where lead is omnipresent, the UPAL program focuses on preventing rather than treating lead poisoning by making information on lead safety accessible to parents.
