Giant merger creates biotech power

The proposed merger between the two Swiss pharmaceutical giants Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz will create the second-largest pharmaceutical company in the world. The joint company, Novartus, will have assets of $12.5 billion, a significant amount of which will be used to fund research and development.
