Gordon & Breach impanels a journal jury
Article Abstract:
Science publisher Gordon & Breach have been engaging in the unusual policy of suing anyone who says their expensive journals are expensive. Indeed, librarian Joel Rutstein has been threatened with a suit for saying that Gordon & Breach was inclined to sue people. Now, the publisher has been accused of being behind the formation of a panel which is supposed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of scientific journals. The trouble began when physicist Henry Barschall published a report analyzing the cost of journals, and suggested that not only were some of Gordon & Breach's journals the most expensive, but they were in fact referred to less often by scientists than other, less expensive publications. Gordon & Breach sued, claiming not only that Barschall was out of line, but that the journals and professional associations that published his reports were engaging in a self-serving act of unfair competition. The panel to objectively review the cost-effectiveness of scientific journals is being set up by the Foundation for International Scientific Cooperation, whose president is a close friend of Gordon & Breach's chairman. Some observers feel that the only thing which is being accomplished is far more bad publicity for Gordon & Breach than the original articles ever produced.
