Honolulu's street relief
Article Abstract:
Frank Coluccio Construction Co., Honolulu, brought Woodward-Clyde to develop alternatives for a value engineering proposal for sewer construction in urban Honolulu. The proposal includes the use of microtunneling approach and jet grouting method to stabilize the ground. The primary soil conditions constitute a complex sequence of young and weak lagoonal deposits along with coral reef formation having broken and porous coral limestone. In contrast to the open trench method, microtunneling reduces external ground water control requirements, and extracted volume of contaminated soil and ground water. Other benefits are discussed.

Microtunneling under Honolulu
Article Abstract:
The Dept of Wastewater Management in Honolulu, HI, planned the construction of a sewer pipeline called the Nimitz Highway Reconstructed Sewer Project. Planning for the sewer system involved several concerns regarding subsurface conditions, soil quality, obstructions and construction inconveniences. The design engineers of Woodward-Clyde International and M and E Pacific Inc addressed these problems. They specified and recommended the jet grouting and microtunneling methods for the sewer project.

Manholes and microtunneling
Article Abstract:
The Oakland Beach Interceptor Sewer Project in Staten Island, NY, encountered difficulties beyond the financial costs of the project. A large-diameter sewer pipe must be placed in a developed area with minimal disruption of the residents. This was accomplished by a combination of wet caisson shaft sinking, microtunneling and pipe jacking. By treating groundwater as an aid and not as an obstacle, the project was finished ahead ofschedule with a big amount saved from the city's coffers.
