A screening of mutant zebrafish, whose transparent embryos make them an ideal model, identified hundreds of new development-related genes. Neural crest cell specialization was found to be a gradual process. A breakthrough was made in the understanding of limb development in chick embryos.

France distributes iodine near reactors

France's health ministry has decided to distribute potassium iodide tablets to people living near nuclear power facilities, which they would take in case of a nuclear accident to help protect them from radiation poisoning. The US is now reviewing its policy on this issue.
