Interactions between a hydrophobic organic chemical and natural organic matter: equilibrium and kinetic studies
Article Abstract:
The presence of fast-desorbing labile fraction and slow-desorbing nonlabile fraction was both confirmed in a kinetic experiment involving well-characterized, purified, peat humic acid and pentachlorobenzene. The system further exhibited a non-linear sorption behavior due to the occurrence of interrupted flow and moderate isotherm events. Results further showed that the Langmuir model provided a better analysis of adsorption isotherm, desorption experiment and interrupted flow compared to conventional first-order frameworks.

Fate of pulp mill organochlorines in the Gulf of Bothnia sediments
Article Abstract:
The amounts of adsorbable organic halogen, extractable organic halogen, free chlorophenols and bound chlorophenols in sediment cores from the Gulf of Bothnia were measured to determine the fate of organochlorines discharged from a nearby pulp mill. The results showed that the organochlorines accumulated in recipient bottoms, with decreasing concentrations as the outward gradient became steeper.

Distribution of halogenated organic material in sediments from anthropogenic and natural sources in the Gulf of Finland catchment area
Article Abstract:
Organochlorine compounds that are contained in wastes coming from the pulp and paper industry poses threats to the environment. The research investigated the total organohalogen concentrations in the Gulf of Finland. Extractable organic halogen from sediments taken from the gulf, the Kymi river, and Lake Saimaa were used to measure the organochlorine pollution in the area.
