Oil pollution in the straits of Malacca, Malaysia: application of molecular markers for source identification
Article Abstract:
Researchers from Malaysia and Japan collected tar ball samples from the coast of the Straits of Malacca, Malaysia to determine the exact source of oil spills. The process involves the use of triterpanes, a biomarker compounds utility that can pinpoint the source of the oil spill.

Plastic resin pellets as a transport medium for toxic chemicals in the marine environment
Article Abstract:
Plastic polypropylene (PP) pellets are collected from four locations along the Japanese coastline to measure the amount of PCBs and DDE leached from the seawater, and the concentrations of nonylphenols (NP) that come from the pellets themselves. A control group of virgin pellets is exposed to seawater to help determine the source of contamination. Elevated concentrations of pollutants in the pellets are discussed as detrimental to the endocrine systems of marine birds that ingest the pellets.
