Ironing out the wrinkles in the prion strain problem
Article Abstract:
Researchers may have found the answer to the puzzle of how prion can exhibit strain differences even though the infectious agent lacks genetic material. Research indicates that different strains are the same protein misfolded in a variety of ways.

Highly variable mutation rates in commensal and pathogenic Escherichia coli
Article Abstract:
A discussion of mutation rates in populations of E. coli is presented. There is disagreement as to whether mutations to antibiotic resistance are a feature of pathogenic strains or whether they are evidence of adaptive evolution in all bacteria.

Quick-change pathogens gain an evolutionary edge
Article Abstract:
Research on Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica indicates that a high percentage have a genetic flaw that makes them very prone to mutation. The mutators often develop resistance to antibiotics and to food processing methods.
