Kinetics of nitroaromatic reduction on granular iron in recirculating batch experiments
Article Abstract:
The group of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) used in determining granular iron reactivity in anoxic pH 10, 0.008 M KNO3 solution were reduced rapidly to anilines. The anilines sorbed strongly to the solid particles and affected the reduction of NACs. The granular iron lost its reactivity also rapidly over the first few days of exposure. Flushing the system with background electrolyte between experiments was found to limit reactivity loss due to reversibly sorbed products.

Reduction of nitroaromatic compounds coupled to microbial iron reduction in laboratory aquifer columns
Article Abstract:
Several monosubstituted nitrobenzenes were analyzed to determine the interrelationship between organic pollutant reduction and microbial iron reduction in anaerobic aquifers. The results showed that the nitroaromatic compounds (NAC) had different one-electron reduction potentials although they reduced at similar rates. It is suggested that NACs have an enhancing effect on the activity of iron-reducing bacteria in aquifers.

Reduction of substituted nitrobenzenes by Fe(II) in aqueous mineral suspensions
Article Abstract:
Reduction kinetics involving substituted nitrobenzenes by Fe(II) is examined in aqueous mineral suspensions. Magnetite was selected as the primary mineral for its iron-reducing properties, while nitroaromatic compounds were chosen as model compounds for valuable redox reactions in the environment. Substituted nitrobenzenes were reduced in both aqueous magnetite/FE(II) and other mineral/FE(II) suspensions.
