The Internet and computational technologies are enabling scientists to make stunning progress in science and engineering. Pres Clinton's proposed 3% budget increase for the National Science Foundation will allow it to fund an new initiative supporting electronic communication in science.

"Wired" science or whither the printed page?
Article Abstract:
The possibility that electronic journals will replace printed scientific journals raises the issues of quality control and intellectual property rights. The scientific community must become involved in planning for the electronic publishing of scientific materials.

Evaluating the evidence for past life on Mars
Article Abstract:
The polyaromatic hydrocarbons found in Martian meteorite ALH84001 may indicate past life on Mars or may be have become part of the meteorite through nonbiological mechanisms. Both interpretations of the data are discussed.
