Lake Erie fish declines hooked to phosphorus?
Article Abstract:
The decline in fish population in Lake Erie is being linked to the decline in phosphorus levels in the lake. Improved sewage treatment has resulted to a sharp decline in phosphorus levels in the lake from 29,000 metric tons per in 1969 to 8-12,000 metric tons per year at present. Phosphorus is a limiting nutrient for algae, which are food for zooplankton. Fish normally feed on zooplankton.

Drought and methylmercury loss
Article Abstract:
Acid rain and drought deplete dissolved organic carbon levels in lakes. Dissolved organic carbon absorbs UV light, protecting microscopic animals and plants at the bottom of the food chain. However, more UV penetration into lakes increases the break down of the toxin methylmercury.
