London linkage
Article Abstract:
The Limehouse Link highway tunnel connects London's business areas with the Docklands. It measures about 1.8 km, and has been called the most complicated civil engineering project. The design was influenced by the difficult soil strata, and the project was supervised by Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers, New York. The project's neighborhoods were given other residences, and others were insulated from the noise when site work commenced in Oct 1989. The project has been completed in spite of some hurdles, and can withstand loads equivalent to a five-story building.

Taming the urban underground
Article Abstract:
Guidelines on designing and installing excavation support systems in urban areas are given. The nature and location of structures near the excavation site have to considered in choosing a support system. Utility structures are not buried deep, unlike sewer systems. The system should allow utilities to continue operating or they should be transferred to another site. Relocated structures are less prone to destruction from construction work and earth movements.
