Making electricity from trees

Three innovations in the production and use of wood are presented. A process in which whole trees are burned promises to produce an effective and clean source of energy; trees have been developed that grow ten feet a year; and the gaseous form of wood chips is used to power a turbine.

The Data Encryption Standard (DES) has been used for encoding federal computer files and banking codes as well as codes for personal computers and facsimile machines. Since it dates from the 1970s, however, there is concern that the DES code may have become vulnerable.

Ian Wilmut and his fellow researchers developed the cloning technique that led to birth of a sheep cloned from an adult cell. The cloning technology can be utilized to genetically engineer sheep that produce drugs or animals for human organ transplantation.
