Safety from the top down
Article Abstract:
Work related injuries and ill health mean the loss of many working days and high liability insurance costs to employers. Management failure is the most common cause of accidents and ill health, and the Accident Prevention Advisory Unit (APAU) believes that a large majority of fatal accidents could have been prevented through positive management action. The Engineers Employers' Federation (EEF) has launched a Management Award Scheme for companies which achieve good results through management of their health and safety at work policies. The HSE has also found that many reported electrical accidents involve portable equipment and the 240 volt mains supply.

Fuelling the debate
Article Abstract:
Alternatives to diesel and gasoline abound, but all have drawbacks. Methanol has a high energy content but is toxic and corrosive to engines. Ethanol is also toxic but produces no net carbon dioxide emissions. Rape seed oil is too expensive and takes much energy to produce. Hydrogen requires enormous energy to free it from oxygen, and is too dangerous for auto use. Better engines, catalytic converters and improved gasoline will dominate for some time.
