Manhole rehab
Article Abstract:
Engineering consultancy firm SEA Consultants Inc. rehabilitated the manholes of the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority's Wellesley Extension Relief Sewer project. The engineering firm used trenchless technology in repairing the manholes which were heavily deteriorated because of hydrogen sulfide corrosion. A three-inch thick concrete wall made of three different concrete mixes was added to the manholes. Heat fusion and heat welding were then applied to seal the PVC liner joints in the manholes.

Rehab by helicopter
Article Abstract:
The Dulzura Conduit has been supplying water to San Diego County, California since 1909. Restoration of the aging structure necessitated the replacement of original wooden flumes and trestles with mortar-lined steel pipe on concrete and steel supports. Due to the isolated location of the conduit, helicopters were used for demolition, concrete placement, erection of the steel structure, and pipe laying. Nonblast rock breaking, rock bolting, and innovative coatings were also used in the project.

Design-build & co.: a brave new world
Article Abstract:

This system allows construction companies to meet goals in project costs and scheduling. However, it also creates problems such as the incompatibility of project participants and technology transfer risks.
