Manufacturers lead new reference materials program
Article Abstract:
The Certified Reference Material Manufacturers Assn. has developed a new certification program for environmental reference materials to replace the program cancelled by EPA. The program will provide values for each material based on a certified reference standard to ensure its quality. The association has instructed the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) to develop a new standards criteria to keep down the costs of the materials. Meanwhile, the American Chemical Society suggested to ASTM to pattern the technical criteria on its reagent grading system to avoid high costs of certification.

A blueprint for water quality
Article Abstract:
Ways of improving water quality in the US are collected in a report released by an umbrella organization for this effort, Water Quality 2000. Contained in the report are a mix of regulations, educational programs, institutional reorganizations, incentives and voluntary programs regarding issues in water quality. However, state and local implemetation of these programs are still to be seen. Financial and education issues involved must be addressed.
