Mars loss could sink planetary probes
Article Abstract:
The Nov 1996 failure of Mars '96, Russia's Mars mission, may have ended Russia's planetary science program, since any remaining funds are likely to go to astrophysics projects. Two US Mars missions will proceed as planned but will miss much complementary research from the Russian spacecraft.

Panel backs joint Bion mission
Article Abstract:
A task force praised the scientific value of the Bion mission and held that the mission did not mistreat rhesus monkeys. Animal-rights activists and some legislators are opposed to the US-Russian space life sciences mission. NASA's Bion 11 flight is scheduled for fall 1996.
