Meeting Spotlights Creatures Great and Small
Article Abstract:
The Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology meeting in 1999 discussed, among other issues, legless amphibians and snakes. Some species of the tropical amphibian caecilian bear live young ones, and how they are fed is being studied by scientists. Snakes that hunt on the ground apparently use the retaining of feces to help in their hunting efforts.

The National Science Foundation sponsored a three-day workshop in Apr 1993 to determine how to implement the first All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory, a survey that could identify each type of organism within a given area, including viruses, fungi and unidentified species of bacteria.

Knowing the earth's biodiversity: challenges for the infrastructure of systematic biology
Article Abstract:
The research collections of systematic biology institutes are the most important source of information about the earth's biodiversity. The institutes need funding to create information systems that will give global access to their resources.
