Microtunneling meets mother nature
Article Abstract:
The energy plant being constructed under the Ocean Thermal Energy Project requires laying pipelines under the Pacific Ocean. A tunnel is being dug for that purpose. But the basaltic lava, sand, and gravel under the ocean are posing problems. Directional drilling is not possible because of drill pipe failure and the problems of returning drilling fluid. A RVS 800 microtunneling equipment is being used for drilling. The waves, buoyancy of the steel pipe, and lava tubes also make drilling difficult. A submersible buoy is used to recover the microtunneling equipment after drilling.
