Mortgaging science's future
Article Abstract:
Scientists have managed to save some federal research funds from being cut, but more attention and dollars must be paid to training new scientists. The processes of mentoring, multidisciplinary training and making training portable have to be reexamined and supported.

Universities: at the center of U.S. research
Article Abstract:
Vannevar Bush's 1945 report 'Science - The Endless Frontier' provided a model for a science policy based on research universities that is still valid in the 1990s. Experience indicates that industry cannot take the place of the university as the center of research.
