Salvaging streams
Article Abstract:
Erosion in streams near suburban developments has accelerated to the point of destruction. Hard structural solutions have been employed to address the problem but alternative solutions using nature do exist. In the case of a dying stream in a Henrico County, VA, park, a public/private alliance was started to find bioengineering solutions to save the waterway. This relatively new approach of bioengineering was successfully applied by the alliance to restore the eroded stream.

Getting the GISt of costs
Article Abstract:
Newark, NJ, has used geographic information systems to determine the environmental benefits versus costs of saving a deteriorating part of the Passaic River where the riverbank has eroded dangerously. This is one of the few instances where GIS was successfully employed to perform accurate benefit-cost analyses in environmental remediation efforts. The GIS erosion model used in the Passaic River project has been further refined for future applications.
