NSF revamps graduate training grants
Article Abstract:
NSF unveiled the Integrate Graduate Education and Research Training program in its 1998 budget proposal to respond to the fact that job opportunities for PhD scientists are mostly found in industry. The program will focus on interdisciplinary training and promote opportunities for working in industry.

NSF fits in new projects despite squeeze on funding
Article Abstract:
The NSF created a Major Research Equipment account in 1994 to prioritize the funding of major projects without disturbing small grants. The 1988 budget will request $85 million for a South Pole station, a laser interferometry gravity-wave observatory, the Millimeter Array and Polar Cap Observatory.

Illinois, San Diego centers win renewed NSF funding
Article Abstract:
NSF awarded funding for its $65-million-per-year supercomputer program to Illinois and San Diego under a new initiative called Partnerships for Advanced Computational Infrastructure. Funding will discontinue for programs at Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center and Cornell Theory Center.
