Narcolepsy Genes Wake Up the Sleep Field
Article Abstract:
The discovery of Mendelian transmission of narcolepsy as an autosomal recessive trait was made in dogs two decades ago. A canine narcolepsy gene has now been identified by positional cloning, following William Dement's work at Stanford University. Genetic backcrosses were made over time and a linkage marker was identified for the narcolepsy gene. Researchers were able to identify a region of conserved synteny with a human gene, then used homology mapping with expressed sequences. A set of close recombinant animals narrowed the cirtical region containing the canarc-1 locus.

Activities of recent S&E graduates vary significantly by field of degree
Article Abstract:
A survey of 1988 and 1989 sciences and engineering graduates is reported. Of 779,800 bachelor's and master's degree recipients, 75% were employed in 1990 while 20% were pursuing graduate studies. Science graduates were more likely to continue studying while engineering graduates had a higher incidence of employment in science-engineering environments. For both disciplines, however, the recipient of masters degrees were more likely to be hired than holders of bachelor degrees.
