New Virus Fingered in Malaysian Epidemic
Article Abstract:
A virus that has killed at least 95 people in Malaysia has been identified as the Nipah virus, carried by pigs. Malaysian officials originally thought the disease was linked to Japanese encephalitis, which causes similar symptoms, and spent a large amount of money on fogging and vaccinations. Researchers fear that the Nipah virus has a long incubation period, and many more cases will evolve in the coming months.

Biological Invaders Sweep In
Article Abstract:
The international exchange of animals and plants has often been beneficial throughout history, but the increase in travel and trade also has brought unfamiliar and unwelcome pests to various parts of the world, such as Eurasian cheatgrass to the US, and the North American corn rootworm to Eastern Europe. Efforts to fight these and other pests are discussed.

Can the Placebo Be the Cure?
Article Abstract:
An antidepressant drug was shelved when research confirmed that patients who had been given a placebo had done as well as patients who were given the drug. This so-called placebo effect is little understood and little studied. The placebo effect also makes psychopharmacology particularly complicated, although some view it as an insight into mental health.
