New York gets wired
Article Abstract:
The changing needs of the NYCDOT has forced the department to implement and integrate a $1.7 million combined system of computer-aided drafting and design and geographic information systems into a single information channel. The system will help the department to draw intersections and track incidents on the city's streets. It will also improve pothole repair and road design, develop tree planting plans and map city bridges. The system also produces thematic maps for transportation alternatives to local community boards.

New York overhauls historic arched aqueduct
Article Abstract:
New York state is restoring the 76-year-old, 90-meter Woodland Viaduct in Westchester County. The $11-million project is rather difficult because of the structure's unusual arched design and its need for a seismic upgrade. Woodland Aqueduct features four parallel arches that support a series of spandrel arches supported in turn by columns. The structure suffers from cracking and spalling and its concrete bridge deck is weakening.
