New risk-based hazardous waste regulations draw fire in California
Article Abstract:
Environmental groups and industry in California are opposing a proposed state hazardous waste classification system that is based on the CalTOX, a multimedia, advanced risk assessment model. The classification system, which was formulated to simplify California's complex waste regulation, would put waste into three broad categories namely, managed industrial waste, nonhazardous waste and hazardous waste. Critics complain about the vague distinction between the three categories.

Ecological risk assessment struggles to define itself
Article Abstract:
Risk assessment practitioners are working to establish tools, procedures and standards that will turn ecological risk assessment into a discipline. Although the EPA's Office of Research and Development has proposed guidelines for the regularization of the field, risk assessors contend that these failed to address some of the conflicts within the enterprise. The lack of a common baseline, however, has been pinned on the newness of the field and its complexity.

Predicting chemical risks with multimedia fate models
Article Abstract:
Canadian regulators are using multimedia mass balance models to predict the fate of a range of chemicals in the environment. The approach guides officials in crafting regulations aimed at reducing the hazardous effects of chemicals to the environment by allowing them to track the chemicals' movement and determine their final destination.
