New role for HIV: a vehicle for moving genes into cells
Article Abstract:
Didier Trono and Inder Verma have developed a non-replicating version of the HIV virus as a delivery vector for gene therapy. Finding a vector that could penetrate target cells had been a stumbling block. Murine leukemia virus, the retrovirus currently used, can only enter cells while they are dividing.

A controversy has developed over the lifestyle and credibility of Nobel Laureate Kary Mullis, who was expected to testify on DNA evidence for the defense in the O.J. Simpson trial. Mullis has previously testified against the use of the polymerase chain reaction technique in DNA identificiation.

Research 'summit' ponders health funding shortfall
Article Abstract:
Health officials from 14 countries met for two days in Oct 1996 in Ottawa, Canada, to discuss raising money for research. They made no specific recommendations at this G-14 summit, but they learned that biomedical researchers around the world are very concerned about funding.
