Nuclear power's dim future
Article Abstract:
Nuclear power's share in overall electricity production in the US, currently at around one-fifth, will fall, and the prospects for the industry are poor. The low demand for electricity is going against further extension of nuclear power capacity, and nuclear power plants are even running at a loss. These plants have to be large to be profitable, but demand does not justify such large facilities, and the industry has also been badly affected by factors such as rising running costs and lengthy construction periods. The prospects for nuclear power development in certain other countries are also discussed.

Cleanup in the Arctic
Article Abstract:
The Barents Sea initiative has been introduced as a means of controlling the pollution being generated in the European Arctic by European Russian and Siberian industrial facilities. Norway and other Nordic countries are providing Russia with financial and technical assistance in order to reduce Russia's energy input-output ratio and for the remodeling or closing down of polluting factories. By doing so, pollution in the area is abated while the political stability of Russia is maintained.
