Panayiotis Varotsos, a Greek physicist, has developed an innovative means of predicting earthquakes through the use electrical instruments. Varotsos claims that by planting ground electrodes, one may be able to forecast electromagnetic tremors and earthquake. His method has so far been rejected by seismic experts.

Materials experts have adopted a novel means of preventing the corrosion of water-carrying metal pipes through the use of genetically engineered bacteria. These strains are actually integrated with oxygen-receptive bacteria to eliminate the corrosive action of sulfate reducers.
