On the path of a pathogen
Article Abstract:
The outbreak of the Ebola hemorrhagic fever in the general hospital of Kikwit in Zaire in early 1995 resulted in the death of 80% of those infected. Early intervention, the use of safe nursing barrier methods, the disinfection of Ebola wards and the segregation of patients contributed to the containment of the deadly disease. However, after possible disease vectors were trapped by the thousands in the area where the first victim was infected, no clues emerged as to the source of the reservoir of Ebola viruses.

A ligand-receptor mechanism in plant-pathogen recognition
Article Abstract:
Two studies have found direct indications of a ligand-receptor mechanism for recognition of pathogens by plants. Research on the relationship between the dominant resistance gene and the corresponding dominant avirulence gene is discussed.
