The Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee closely questioned Ron Crystal of the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center on a proposed injection of engineered genes into healthy, normal volunteers. The committee eventually approved the procedure, but expressed apprehension about future experiments.

Alzheimer's maverick moves to industry

Neuroscientist Allen Roses is leaving Duke University to lead Glaxo's rapidly expanding genetics program, that comprises 150 scientists in facilities in the US, UK, and Switzerland. Roses is anxious to develop therapeutic drugs for Alzheimer's disease.
