A National Academy of Sciences panel headed by Val Fitch recommended spending the $250 million needed to complete the $500 million Gravity Probe-B project. However, a minority on the panel expressed concern about the complexity of the experiment to test the general theory of relativity.

Panel considers radical funding cuts

The Congressional Research Service convened a panel to consider four scenarios for how the federal government could fund civilian research and development that would be more conducive to balancing the federal budget by 2002. The panel rejected a proposal to eliminate government funding.
