Paradise crossed
Article Abstract:
The American Society of Civil Engineers voted the builders of Hawaii's Interstate H-3 project winner of the association's 1998 Outstanding Civil Engineering Award. The $1.3-billion project took over 30 years to complete and is a four-lane, 16-mile highway that connects the eastern and western sides of Oahu island and the island's military centers. Part of it entailed the construction of a twin-bore, nearly mile-long tunnel through the Koolau Mountains.

Tough conditions, innovative solutions
Article Abstract:
The Massachusetts Highway Department Central Artery/Tunnel construction project in Boston, Massachusetts, includes two novel civil engineering designs using deep soil mixing (DSM) and tunnel jacking techniques. An overview of the technology is described. The DSM technique has firmed up 900,000 cubic yards of soft soil material using cement. Structural aspects of the construction are considered.
