Physician-Scientists--Endangered and Essential
Article Abstract:
The medical research industry of the U.S. is suffering a dangerous, progressive decline in the number of physician-scientists. This special group of clinical investigators devote most of their professional work to research of disease and health. The physician-scientist title covers basic, disease-oriented, patient-oriented, population-oriented, and prevention-oriented research professionals. The decline was noted by the National Institutes of Health 20 years ago and has been frequently noted since. .

The winners of the Nobel Prizes have contributed a great deal of important information to the annals of science. Much controversy has centered around the omission of contributing scientist Salvador Moncada from those receiving the Nobel Prize for work on the role of Nitric oxide while co-workers were nominated.
