Plasma physicists seeks new uses for the legacy of fusion
Article Abstract:
The reductions in government funding for fusion-energy research have caused plasma physicists to develop ways in which fusion energy can be used for non-military applications. The generation of magnetic fields, use of plasma energy for spacecraft propulsion and detonation of plasma are described.

Grown-up physicists play serious games in the sandbox
Article Abstract:
Granular materials is becoming a more popular topic of study among physicists. Such materials act as metaphors for other physical systems. What is learned from granular materials may provide information about phenomena such as convection cells in fluids and the development of the early universe.

A fine-grained look at forces in sand
Article Abstract:
A research team led by Susan Coppersmith showed that weight is distributed unevenly in piles of granular materials such as sand. High-tech imaging of lines of stress and low-tech carbon-paper prints of sand-grain weight distribution both agreed with computer simulations of force distribution.
