Pollution-purging poplars

Environmental scientists at the University of Washington revealed that poplar trees are instrumental in decontaminating water- and land-borne organic pollutants. These scientists planted 800 poplar hybrids in a town in Oregon, which is contaminated by trichloroethane.

Electronic noses, which translate patterns of aroma into computer data, are already being used in industry. Advances in miniaturization and sensitivity will eventually allow the e-noses to identify chemical spills, hunt for truffles and keep toast from burning.
