Predicting sediment loads
Article Abstract:
The design of reservoirs take into consideration the level of sediment build-up. Sediment load projections can mean a more precise prediction of reservoir life. When certain dams experience sediment load problems and consequently, storage capacity and reservoir life reduction due to faulty estimates, it is not necessary that new formulas to predict sedimentation better are invented. The upgrading and better usage of accepted systems, while attaching more importance to the rating curve, factors of seasonality in sediment loads and variations in daily flow are the required actions.

Beware the sediment scare
Article Abstract:
Sediments containing traces of hazardous waste that gather in storm water facilities can be classified as hazardous waste under the secondary and perceived forms of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). This can be avoided by reducing the chances of getting storm water in contact with the listed chemicals under RCRA, educating employees about the problem, keeping a regular check on the quantity and usage of hazardous chemicals, installing storm water pre-treatment facilities and regulating the quantity of sediments entering the BMP facility.
