Research has influenced printing press design with regard to factors such as thermal control, but some control functions have been difficult to engineer. Printed material in the newspaper, magazine and catalogue publishing fields is increasingly distributed electronically and then printed locally, creating the need for agile printing presses. Integrated computer control and the agile printing press are the main engineering targets for the future.
