Status of ASCE standard on design and construction of frost protected shallow foundations
Article Abstract:
Geosynthetic thermal-insulation materials, or geofoam, are a significant component in the design and construction of frost-protected shallow foundation systems. Generic geofoam materials consist of solid panels of either extruded polystyrene or block-molded expanded polystyrene. The limiting compressive stress for geofoam applications can be better defined using a theoretically sound and explicit approach that makes use of elastic-limit stress as a design parameter.

Plane-strain modeling of smear effects associated with vertical drains
Article Abstract:
A study on the smear effects involving vertical drains is evaluated. The authors are praised for the analytical expressions derived for the plane-strain permeability matching of soil in the smear zone of a vertical drain. However, corrections are given on the parameter beta used in these expressions. It is also argued that the discrepancies between the field observations and numerical analyses are due to their geometrical differences.
