A process view of technology management - implications for R&D
Article Abstract:
The tenets of business process analysis can be applied to the technology management arena. Using a process viewpoint, it can be argued that public and corporate R&D units are engaged in business processes that should have as their principal objective the enhancement of the wealth-generating capabilities of the organizations they support. As such, the process viewpoint places R&D programs in the context of the creation of customer value. A good way to initiate change in the R&D sphere would be to adopt re-engineering principles such as culture change and task force management.

Managing innovation: lessons from world class organizations
Article Abstract:
An innovation model that provides a framework for guiding R&D within organizations is provided. One distinctive feature of this innovation model is its emphasis on the emulation of four behavioral dimensions found in best-of-breed companies. These four critical dimensions are identified as the inquisitive, advocative, collaborative and goal-directed. It is suggested that managerial practices be redesigned to promote these four critical factors in R&D organizations. Furthermore, it is suggested that companies implement formal culture-building programs to foster innovation.
