The MSW incinerator as a monitoring tool for waste management
Article Abstract:
A new method to routinely measure the chemical composition of municipal solid waste is proposed by researchers at the University of Technology Vienna in Austria. The method involves analyzing only a single incineration residue. Because they transform heterogenous wastes into more homogenous residues, waste incineration plants are chosen as a base for easy and cost-effective monitoring of the chemical composition of wastes. The proposed method provides a routine tool for quality control in waste management. The article also outliens procedures to select the appropriate incineration residue to be analyzed, determine the minimum sampling frequency of the residue and analyze the chemical composition of municipal solid waste routinely with a given accuracy.

Enhanced thermal destruction of anthracene vapor upon laser irradiation at 248 nm in the 150-800 degrees C range
Article Abstract:
Photochemical incineration of anthracene was conducted to investigate proper disposal techniques for toxic and municipal waste. A flowing gas experiment was undertaken, where anthracene vapor was diluted in 1 atm of filtered compressed air and flowed through the all-quartz cell of 50 cm. length and 38 mm. diameter. Results showed the thermal and the photon-assisted thermal destruction of anthracene.
