A laser in tune with itself: multiwavelength lasers as a new feat of quantum engineering
Article Abstract:
Federico Capasso and colleagues at Bell Laboratories have developed the quantum cascade laser which can emit three different infrared wavelengths at the same time. The device may be used in sensors for measuring the concentration of trace chemicals in the atmosphere.

Bright opportunity: electroluminescent polymers illuminate an old institution
Article Abstract:
Researchers at Cambridge Display Technologies have developed a new technology for manufacturing full-color flat-panel displays through the use of derivatives of polyphenylenevinylene that emit light. These derivatives span the entire visible spectrum of light.
