Real stinkers reformed: Malodorous but useful chemicals now smell sweet
Article Abstract:
A family of carbon-nitrogen-based compounds called isonitriles is usually ignored by scientists due to their very foul odor, despite their known utility in drug discovery and polymer manufacture. But the synthesis of fragrant isonitriles with soy, malt and cherry aromas, which function as effectively as the original isonitriles and are also safer to formulate, may enable their use as important tools in organic chemistry.

A new take on hybrids
Article Abstract:
A consortium of the three firms like General Motors, DaimlerChrysler and BMW working on an alternative technology called a two-mode hybrid to challenge Toyota's supremacy is reported. Unlike Toyota's single-mode Hybrid Synergy Drive, the two-mode offers enhanced fuel efficiency in stop-and-go traffic and also on the highway, producing a 25 percent improvement in combined mileage over standard models.
